Do you know how much money you will get from Social Security if you retire or become disabled in the near future? You could access that information in a matter of seconds if you had my Social Security account.

My Social Security is an online portal the Social Security Administration (SSA) has created which allows you to track your Social Security benefits in real time. It can be a big help to those who are doing retirement planning or estate planning, or applying for disability benefits because it gives you your actual information, not an estimate of what benefits someone like you might be eligible for.

If you do not yet receive benefits, you can log into the account to see an estimate of your future retirement, disability, and survivor benefits. You can also see an estimate of the total amount of Social Security and Medicare taxes you’ve paid, and check your earnings to verify that the amounts posted are correct.

If you are in the process of applying for benefits or appealing a denial of benefits, you can check on the status of your application or appeal in your my Social Security account.

People who already receive benefits can use their my Social Security account to check up on benefit and payment information, and do practical things like update their address and change their direct deposit settings.

To create my Social Security account, all you need to do is visit https://www.ssa.gov/myaccount/ and go through the simple set-up process. You will need to enter some personal information, create a username and password, then verify your account via email or text message. If you have a security freeze or fraud alert on your credit reports, you will need to temporarily disable those services while your account is being set up.

You may only create my Social Security account using your own personal information and for your own exclusive use. You may not create or use an account on behalf of another person, or share the use of your account with anyone else under any circumstances. Unauthorized use of my Social Security account is a misrepresentation of your identity to the federal government and could subject you to criminal and civil penalties.
