We are all struggling with the impacts that the spread of COVID-19 have had on the world. Seniors, in particular, have been hit hard by social distancing measures. While these are in place to help protect groups like the elderly, who are at a high risk of infection, there has been a serious toll taken on the mental health and well being of seniors. This is especially true for those living in nursing homes. Most, if not all, nursing homes have closed doors to visitors in an attempt to prevent the spread of COVID-19 to residents. Those of advanced years, especially those with compromised immune systems and underlying health conditions, are in especially great danger of contracting COVID-19, so these kinds of measures are necessary. If you have a loved one in a nursing home at this time, however, you may be worried about the impacts social isolation has had on them. Here, we will take a moment to explain how you can help boost the morale of an elderly loved one living in a nursing home during COVID-19.

How to Boost the Morale of a Loved One Living in a Nursing Home During COVID-19

While you may be unable to go into a nursing home facility to show your support of your loved one living there, technology has given us many opportunities to remain connected even when we are apart. The phone, Skype, and FaceTime have allowed us unprecedented access to our loved ones when we cannot be with them in person. Make full use of these wonderful technological developments. Schedule a regular time to contact your elderly loved one and put it on your calendar so that you remember and it does not fall by the wayside.

A good, old-fashioned letter or care package to a loved one in a nursing home facility can also go a long way to boost morale. More than anything, such a gesture can be a great reminder that they have not been forgotten. It tells them that you continue to think of them even when you are unable to visit in person. Send along an art project or some printed photographs. These are things that can be put on display in a room and brighten up a living space with a nice personal touch.

To help keep your loved one engaged and socially active, consider getting them involved in something like a virtual book club. A book or an audio book can be a great way for some mental stimulation. The book club element will allow them some social engagement and thoughtful conversation. During these times, many are looking for virtual book club members.

Additionally, while nursing homes may be closed to visitors, many still allow visitors to stop by and wave through windows. This can be a great opportunity to see your loved one in person without putting either of you at risk. Consider bringing a cheerful sign to wave as an added touch!
