The year 2020 has thrown some difficult things in our way as a nation and a global community. The COVID-19 pandemic has threatened the health and well-being of people across the world. While new information comes out almost daily as researchers search for a vaccine and a better understanding of this novel virus, one thing seems to have been clear from the beginning which is that seniors tend to be much more susceptible to the dangers associated with contracting COVID-19. This has led to extra strict measures being recommended and required for seniors and senior communities, such as nursing homes and other long-term care facilities. Isolation has been a sad side effect of these strict, but necessary measures.
In the midst of an exceptionally difficult year for older people all over the world, it is especially important to take the time to recognize all the contributions these individuals have made to our communities and all the struggles they have yet to face. The First of October marks the 30th Anniversary of the International Day of Older Persons and it is the perfect opportunity to reflect on all that the older generation has given to us and discuss ways we can support them going forward.
Taking Time to Honor Our Seniors on International Day of Older Persons
Established by the United Nations, International Day of Older Persons is an annual day of observance that comes with a concerted effort to raise awareness of the challenges and triumphs of the senior community across the globe. Each year has a different theme and focus. For the 2020 International Day of Older Persons, the vital role of the health care workers who contribute to supporting and promoting the health of older persons will be highlighted. Special recognition will be given to those in the nursing profession, more specifically.
The 2020 observance will also kick off the Decade of Healthy Ageing (2020-2030) effort by the UN. Experts from the UN, civil society, government, and health care professions will be brought together to evaluate the strategic objections of the Global Strategy Action Plan on Ageing and Health in addition to analyzing the progress that has been made as well as the challenges yet to face in achieving the set goals. The initiative aims to help ensure healthy living and promotes well-being at all ages.
The other focuses of the 2020 observance of International Day of Older Persons include raising awareness of the unique health needs of older persons and the impacts they can have on their own health. There will also be special attention paid to increasing the understanding of the particular impact COVID-19 has on older persons as well as the effects the virus has had on health care policy and planning.
